Who was Celeste?
The name Celeste comes from the birth name of Sister Scholastica Vasques. She was one of the first four sisters who came to St. Paul from St. Louis. Her parents named her Celestine, but when she became a Sister of St. Joseph in 1847, she received the name Scholastica.
Little information about her remains, but it can be surmised that she was a courageous and resourceful woman. As a 22 year old French Creole woman, she traveled alone to teach the Winnebago Indians in Long Prairie, Minnesota. Her enthusiasm and willingness to share her gifts and to learn from others continues to flourish in the spirit and work of the sisters who followed her. It is in honor of Celestine that we have named this initiative Celeste's Dream.
