SOA Protest Pilgrimage
Protests are a form of free speech. Dissent is a sign of a people paying attention to government, using their ability to think, to judge and to act. As a result of years of protesting, and hundreds - if not thousands - of arrests, the School of the Americas (SOA) had its name changed to Western Hemispheric Institute of Security Co-operation (WHISC). New name, same mission. The following articles relate the experiences of two protesters and their companions on the journey to Georgia.

Our Personal Wars
Jesus tells us "to forgive seventy times seven." He advises us "not to let the sun go down on our anger." Maybe the situation requires a healthy talking over between the two parties' or with a third uninvolved person. Of course, this is the deal, but it doesn't always work if one or the other cannot hear. There are times when people simply have to flee to save their sanity.
Reflections on Peace for Challenge
A prophet, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, came into our midst and spoke of Peace, Patriotism, and Nonviolence: Another Way to Confront Terrorism to 1300 listeners at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, February 6, 2002. Gumbleton, auxiliary bishop of Detroit, is one of four bishops who did not support the US Bishops statement, Living in Faith and Hope after September 11, which approved of the US war in Afghanistan. He led a retreat on Nonviolence: The way of Jesus to nearly 300 people the following day.
May God have mercy on us: Another perspective on War and Peace
Glimpses have a way of accumulating. In a recent News Hour interview, Amos Oz, the Israeli author, talked about his new novel, The Same Sea. As the title suggests, it is a story wherein boundaries, while recognized, are brushed aside right and left: characters living and dead talk to one another and to the narrator, what?s happening here is also at the same time happening there, prose moves into poetry into fiction, autobiography, historical fact, whatever.
Pacifism Remains a Worthy Alternative
For 20 years, I've taught pacifism and nonviolence, its history, methods and practitioners to more than 5,000 high school, university, law school and prison students. During those two decades, U.S. presidents, members of Congress and military leaders have also been teaching warism and violence. Their classroom has been the national lectern of Washington from which a lesson plan has sent American troops to kill people or threaten to kill people in nearly a dozen foreign sites.
